I write a daily column about what Beethoven was doing 200 years ago today. One of the most hilarious parts of it is including the period reviews of his works, like the opinion that the Ninth Symphony would be better if he left the last movement off. Or the Sixth Symphony’s half an hour too long.

Any time it becomes apparent that the reviewer is less interested in engaging honestly with a piece of music than they are with longing for the kind of music they grew up with.

Audiences, you can help! Traditional audience etiquette in classical music includes - clapping in the middle of pieces - hollering loudly and demanding that a bit you really liked be played again on the spot - booing the composer because what he did to his wife was really messed up

Classical music has gotten too far from its roots. We need to bring back traditional practices like: - performers cutting passages they don’t feel like playing - putting random pieces of unrelated music in between movements of a multi-movement work - hiring audience members to faint

I'm not ashamed to admit that my experience with Fidelio may have scarred me enough to avoid completing another opera for the rest of my life.
