Lots of CoCoRAHS network reports are in, and the results are: a band of quick, heavy snow set up over Bloomington & vicinity this morning... and there are multiple reports of 2 to 3 inches. Luckily the roads and sidewalks I've seen so far seem fine, just really wet. 45-50 degrees later today!

It has been a landmark weekend here in Bloomington: @iuearth.bsky.social has released the first-ever weather balloons at IU! Part of our contribution, led by Prof. Travis O'Brien, to the Atmospheric River Reconnaissance project to better understand extreme rainfall in the U.S.

It’s darn cold out here but we are still training on the balloons and the software.

As promised... looking west, none of the storms seem like they have much chance of producing any more tornadoes. Lightning + some heavy rain definitely possible if they hold together all the way to here.

Looking "upstream" there are a couple storms in Eastern Illinois that have new tornado warnings (not drawn on this map) -- the expectation is that tornado risk should be lower (cooler temperatures), but we'll look again about 8:30-8:45 and see if the storms have been able to hold together.

Very likely that we'll see tornado damage that was north of the airport, maybe up close to 3rd Street and I-69. I have not listened to any scanners, or looked for any confirmation. That's just my instinct from looking at radar.

And with that, Bloomington, this storm is moving away and the tornado risk inside the main part of town (to College Mall) is now over. No more tornado risk for Bloomington. Even if heavy rain continues at your place.

At least one wind gust to 61 mph here on the west side of town, at the airport. (So likely some 70+ mph gusts around town.). Radar also suggests ping pong ball, maybe an occasional golf ball. This radar is a couple minutes old, circulation should be over at College Mall by now (7:13 pm)

Continue to stay where you are, Bloomington. Behemoth of a supercell. Rotation should be directly over downtown now (7:11 pm)

If you are south of Batchelor this tornado is going to miss you. Expect that a tornado is likely still on the ground, moving directly into Bloomington.

For the weather nerds, impressive wet RFD with hail here on the west side of town

If you are in Clear Creek this tornado is going to miss you. It is moving toward Bloomington, not you.

I see it on radar now. Tornado on the ground, west side of town. Bloomington, safe place, now.

I see a report of a confirmed tornado with this storm, in the last 2-3 minutes, so take this storm seriously. (Not on this radar image, but elsewhere.)

Strongest circulation is now passing by the airport. Again, Bloomington, safe place. No obvious tornado but only takes a minute or so for one to pop out.

Area of rotation with the most likely chance of tornado is now entering Monroe County. Bloomington, you have only 2-3 minutes remaining to get everyone to your safe place. Ellettsville, no tornado for you.

Strongest rotation remains on the south side of the storm (where it’s supposed to be) and will impact the southern side of Bloomington. Is still a bit broad, but could tighten and produce a tornado quickly (as is always true).

No tornado on the ground at the moment, but radar presentation still appears strong. South side of Bloomington, to Clear Creek, in the biggest risk area.

This storm is a heavy rain & hail (up to ping pong ball size) producer, you will likely not be able to see a tornado coming. Do not try to do that.

If you are on the north side of town, probably wouldn't hurt. Ellettsville, being on the far north side of the storm, is away from the region of tornado risk.

This tornado warning includes Bloomington, so you should take the safety precautions you normally take. The most dangerous side of the storm is the southern side -- greatest tornado risk should be downtown southward to Clear Creek.

This storm is still looking "good" (read: strong & dangerous) and I think we are in for a close call here. A few minutes after 7:00. Now's the time to finish up your plans.

Your weather radio (you have one, right?) should have just sounded for Owen & Greene Counties. Tornado warning for the storm that is moving toward Bloomington but won't be here for another 45 minutes. This is the "storm of the day" for us.

Again, great look at the storm near Carlisle, which will move maybe just north of Bloomfield, and could impact Monroe County after 7 p.m.

Zooming out for just a moment, these are **the** storms for us to watch. Trying to get a handle on what their angle of approach is going to be and whether they could lose their organization since all of them appear to be on a crash course with each other.

Not to pick on Lauren here, but I want to take a timeout and point this out to students: these are the kinds of really difficult, never clear-cut, never-easy questions you'll get from the public when you are a practicing meteorologist.

Radar has finally started to light up in our part of the world. The most dangerous storms still in Illinois, will be a couple more hours. (Those have the greatest 🌪️ risk) Entirely possible that one of these earlier ones could produce some wind damage or some hail, if they move over.

Lots of people asking about the weather today in Bloomington. It’s warmer and stickier (higher dewpoint) than usual, two ingredients for thunderstorms. Ignore the calendar, treat this like any other spring evening with a tornado watch, do what you’re supposed to do if you need to. The usual.
