Did you know if you organize your favorite video game studio you can put in your contract the rule that makes sure if you worked on a game you get credited even if you leave before shipping???

If you replace handmade assets with slop while putting it into a product you sell for the same price, that's not a neutral 'cost saving', that's raising your margin by diluting the value of the product you're selling.

We all kind of just assume there are cost savings there but, uh, are there? Is this evidenced anywhere? Like, you can produce a lot of slop, but what's the cost of using genAI to produce assets that are 1:1 replacements for what AAA studios spend money on? To what extent is that even possible?

I know that people love to scream at anyone who dares to try to give people a heads up about how advanced "AI"-type stuff is (which is essential for being able to spot it to avoid getting fooled by it), but I think it's important, actually, to be aware that this is where the tech is currently at.

Every Level Designer I’ve worked with at Rebellion has given me (the Environment Artist) a space blocked out with pacing, metrics, AI enemies considerations, etc. Never architectural or visual considerations first. I love it. This blog kind of goes over this in an in-depth way I hadn’t considered.

It's not any worse than any other layoffs but seeing Giantbomb be strip mined and destroyed hurts real fucking bad. I've spent a lot of time with those folks as a fan and the work they put in over the years to grow such a novel and exciting group shouldn't be ignored.

Seeing so many talented people be treated so poorly at Polygon and now Giantbomb is upsetting and disgusting. I'm just a dev but being in media has never been harder and a worse job than ever it seems. I wish the best for everyone affected now and in the future.

Getting a job in games media seemed almost unattainable when I broke in back in 2005. In the years since, it’s become almost impossible and ultimately inadvisable. I can’t imagine trying to break in today. Independent is pretty much the only option now. Support your favorite creators directly.
