I know everyone is gonna look TO Latin Americanists to understand what is happening, but hear me out - a really relevant case for thinking through consequences is Israel. You want to know what it looks like for an executive to engage in destructive war unchecked by the legislature? I got you. AMA.

When Serving the Public Interest Generates Private Gains: Private Actor Governance and Two-Sided Digital Markets By Guillaume Beaumier, l'École Nationale d'Administration Publique and Abraham Newman, Georgetown University From speech to privacy, broad public interests are increasingly governed online by policy decisions taken by private companies. We examine when and how firms make such decisions. In contrast to the shadow of hierarchy and functionalist explanations of private authority, we build an analytical framework based on business power and the economics literature concerned with two-sided markets.

Policy over Protest: Experimental Evidence on the Drivers of Support for Movement Parties By Dan Mercea and Felipe G. Santos, University of London Across the world, political parties are incorporating social movement strategies and frames. In this study, we pivot from the dominant focus on party characteristics to analyze drivers of support for movement parties in six European countries. We report results from a choice-based conjoint survey experiment showing that contrary to previous research, movement party voters favor neither candidates who are institutional outsiders nor those who actively participate in protests.

I've talked before about power struggles within hardening authoritarianism. Usually, regime supporters fight over using rule-of-law in crackdowns (with massive abuses, of course) vs. completely embracing extrajudicial methods. Here, we see the latter dominating. Which is very bad news going forward.

Racial Context(s) in American Political Behavior By Allison P. Anoll, Vanderbilt University, Lauren D. Davenport, Stanford University, and Rachel Lienesch, Vanderbilt University Since Key and Allport, scholars have argued that racial context affects political behavior, with some finding out-group contact increases intergroup hostility and others showing the opposite. We argue that Americans exist in multiple racial contexts simultaneously that may overlap or conflict, helping to explain past discord.
