Last week, ICE arrested and separated a father and son after a routine check-in. Six-year-old Yuanxin had just enrolled in the first grade at an elementary school in Astoria. Now he's in custody, alone. ICE won't say where. This cruelty serves no one. It must end.

Any one of us could be in the next apartment building that ICE raids in the middle of the night. Any one of us could be on the next boat that Trump bombs on a whim. Any one of us could be detained for hours despite being a U.S. citizen. Authoritarianism hurts all of us.

Today, after months of requests, I toured the Broadview ICE Processing Facility. I want to share what I saw. The facility has no food vendor, no medical care, and detainees have to use toilets in the middle of shared cells. These are in no way suitable conditions to be holding anyone — period.

What is seditious behavior? "Conduct or speech inciting people to rebel against the authority of a state or monarch." What an irony that Trump thinks this should be punished with death, since that's exactly what he was found guilty of for "incitement of insurrection" in his second impeachment.
