Setting up resources for this intervention phase with yr 11 I'm really pleased to see the last phase worked. I see this because I can't reuse any of the old resources because they know those topics. So much work but at least it impacted.

I've mapped out all the intervention students and staffing and topics per session. Yay. However what I have not done is resource it, which I've just realised. Session 1 is tomorrow.

Wonderful parents eve with yr 9. Lots of talking about how confident they feel now and several students saying they loved maths. For a class that struggles with maths, it was heartwarming to hear.

A slight change of wording is a quick win to ask more engaging questions. Here are a few simple examples.

The warm and fuzzy feeling when our maths consultant came in Friday and I updated her on what I'd done since she was in last and she said "wow you've been productive"

My yr 9 class was buzzing today #MathsToday A normally disengaged student returned from an absence and did the challenge qs, another student pushed through too when normally she gives up. Just a beautiful atmosphere. I'd take credit but no idea what caused it!

The moment when I got to tell a student he improved by 50 marks since November mocks. "That's a bit good, innit?"

In #MathsToday yr 9 realised that finding a missing angle was the same as solving an equation. And then worked through pages of work.

I do think we need to be so critical of edtech. Does it do something that we need? Does it add value? Not just "what does it do, does it do it in a way we like?"

This is a really good point. One of the most powerful things we could do to be more inclusive would be to reduce curriculum size so those that find learning harder get more time to learn the most important bits.

Being a secondary mastery specialist is something I’m so proud of, and I’m so grateful to have been a part of this programme with some amazing leaders and participants. I learned so much and it fundamentally changed my teaching practice. You should apply! 😊

My Trust had it's conference today and closed with a video of students saying thanks. I got a heartfelt thanks from one of my year 11s.

I have scheduled in a weekend for gardening (intense changes not pottering around) and a weekend for doing crafts. Hopefully this helps keep me sane this half term.

Passed my first EdD coursework and learned I am quite a harsh marker as I mentally gave myself 12 less marks than I actually got. Very relieved. Now onto practice lit review coursework.

I forgot to turn my alarm off. That's ok though because the cat woke me up half an hour before it would have gone off anyway. Good job he's cute.

#MathsToday does anyone know of a basic numeracy package that monitors progress, diagnoses gaps etc that could be used with KS3/4? If it could be run by a non specialist even better.

Reached my hand out and stroked one cat this morning. Then discovered the cat was very very long. The second cat was behind the first cat, like a queue for strokes and fuss.

Yesterday I same-day marked my yr 11's last mock paper. I got a small round of applause from them in lesson today when I announced this.

Yr 11 mock warm up in the main hall today, giving my HoD pep talk and end it with "and if it's tricky, what do you do?" And yr 11 bellow back "DRAW A PICCY!" Sometimes the job is good.

In #MathsToday we bulk marked some of our mock papers as a team. Realised it was much less emotionally impactful when you don't know if the paper is one of yours or not. So much less "why didn't they get this right?!"

Best moment of the week: celebrating improvement with my yr 9s, some of whom had 10x the marks in the recent test than the previous. Our key skills section in the tests is paying off, they are making big improvement in the basics that we can build on in yr 10.

I’ve repeated the phrase “if it’s tricky, draw a piccy” a lot this term. I’m so pleased to see my students using it on their assessments to justify answers/reasoning. I’ve been focusing on graphing technology and multiple representations in my teaching so it’s great to see it having an impact. ☺️
