7. For scientific progress and OUR understanding of the world this is of course very bad news. The only way to change this is to refocus on discovery NOT being prolific. In our days Galileo would have had not time to look at Jupiter, he would have reported telescopes in different colors instead.

It fundamentally misunderstands the purpose of the scientific literature - which is the exchange of scientific information, ideas and perspectives among peers and whoever shares interest in the highly specialized chunk of natural philosophy the authors care about.

Just to emphasise again, these are not our rankings and there is no ‘deal’. I agree on issues around licences btw - hence authors can select more restrictive ones - but even then that would not preclude ranking by a third party- in the same way one can’t stop a journalist writing about a paper
