I can't speak to Boston, but I've ridden the subways in DC, Philly, and New York in the past 4 months. DC's was the cleanest. New York's is literally a miracle of engineering and management. Philly's was meh, but I felt perfectly safe.

For 99.9% of people your family (biological or chosen) is more important than your job. Your ethics are more important than “success”—live/work so you can tell your children what you did without any shame. If you need it, go to therapy, and you probably need it.

I have many Christian friends on both sides of the political divide, but I also know “Christians” for whom it is a cultural identity with no theological content. They really just mean “European-descended and not Jewish.” They clearly don’t believe in Hell.

The right sets the terms of our political discourse in so many ways, one of which is the idea that there isn't enough "debate" and "free speech" on campus. We need to push back on this. The truth is (speaking for myself as a history prof), I don't really emphasize debate much in my classes/

I 100% concur that we should not tolerate professors or others who call for the death of political opponents. I'd compare the rhetoric at an NRA convention, CPAC, or NatCon with any college campus in America, and see who's advocating violence against their political opponents.

Random thought of the day: what we colloquially call "debate" is closer to a rap battle than an attempt to actually inform and persuade. We are not enlightened by which debater got off the best zinger, regardless of its truth value or salience to the issue.
