I'd add that service being such a strong social escalator wasn't a thing until the GI Bill in 1944. Hell, the government waged war on its own war vets in 1932 because they were determined NOT to even a PARTIAL version of that thing. Being a political liberal in the military was uncomfortable. Being a non-believer in the military was EXTREMELY uncomfortable. Only about 1/4 of Americans ID with anything like this religious belief, so making it part of military service is counterproductive in addition to being ethically wrong.
