Part of the problem is that they don’t consider the sentiments these people are expressing as actual intolerance. Vance's claim that people in Appalachia had similar cultural problems as Black people was seen as an enlightened and progressive perspective rather than a denigration of both communities

And mind you the central premise of this book was that poverty in Appalachia was due to a dysgenic culture regularly attributed to Black people, saying poor white people live like Black people and needed to take responsibility was the big message.
