I agree with all of the below. But I am now wondering, what does it mean for our society that his approval rating remains so high? How much of that same mentality now pervades people's perception of society, both in politics and other spheres of life?

The business world often talks about values but in reality they are talking about methods -- how they do business as usual to accomplish the same goal (i.e. make as much money as possible) A value should be an orienting guidepost when the way seems unclear, and that may involve painful choices.

"We must be as frank as possible about the challenges before us and willing to call things as we see them, no matter what our opponents or even our own allies might say." True, but it's not sufficient to call out things. The way we do it can bring us back to unifying values and our shared humanity.
