At my previous job I used Angular and thought it was annoying but not that bad. After having used React for the past few months... Angular has pretty serious design flaws. The Elm UI model is THE model for writing excellent UIs, you can easily emulate it in React, you can't in Angular.

Zohran Mamdani caught lying that he understood Plato’s allegory of the cave, yet when asked to explain it, he seemed to instead explain Baudrillard’s theory of Simulacra and Simulation where reality has been replaced by symbols and signs, which seems similar to Plato’s theory but is not the same

Having fun looking through Caves of Qud game files. Stumbled upon a file 'Genders.xml' with XML entries for genders like "elverson", and "hartind".

Maybe now is the time to switch to jj vcs. I hate getting a ping of a broken issue on prod and having to do a little dance to make it okay to switch branches.

Setting up comprehensive visual regression testing cli on a big giant messy vanilla js web application with playwright might be the most sanity preserving thing Ive done. Being able to type a one liner into my terminal "show me all visual differences between my local branch and prod" is amazing

The emacs equivalent of neovim plugins are usually much better designed, and simpler. Something about the emacs community produces such a high quality package ecosystem.

Imagine if you had a society where all the politicians were like Mamdani, but the political debates were over super nerdy details on exactly how to implement/run a universal child care system.

It's pretty depressing to me how many people - even on the left - still don't realize that modern states, borders, polices, prisons, etc. must be abolished. States have been so internalized that most leftists, feminists, poor people, etc cannot ever think about a society organized differently

Just saw Perfect Blue. Some scenes were extremely mesmerizing, and the way the dissociation was done was really engaging. But looking back on the movie it's honestly just disgusting how the writers wrote Mima, and the ending they gave her. Offers no justification for her fetishization.

Adding a precommit hook for an LLM to do code review is kind of neat. My use case: python codebase that has no type analysis unless function has type signature, ensure all modified functions in commit include type signature. This makes the LLM ensure that the codebase gradually becomes type safe.

The Sora tiktok product is so disgusting on so many dimensions. What kind of sane organization uses hundreds of millions of dollars not to improve human welfare but to steal art in order to replace artists. Imagine all the ways that money could have otherwise been used.

Took a waymo today in downtown SF with my parents, and it successfully handled 3 near miss scenarios with aggressive drivers. Genuinely shocked by how good their driving algorithm is. Take 1 million of amazing technology I wish was everywhere and wouldn't have severe adverse effects on society.

Extending types by implementing new traits for them in Rust would be my absolute least favorite thing in the language if the compiler errors weren't so good at making it work.
NoiseMapBuilder.build()
is not a method! What?! The documentation shows it is. Sorry, you need to import this trait.

New AI datacenters in Indiana are projected to effectively double Indiana's industrial electricity usage. In a state which overwhelmingly uses fossil fuels for electricity.

Apparently many data centers use open looped evaporative cooling to dissipate heat, meaning municipal water goes into the datacenter and goes out as steam. Often times using underground well water from the local community. I always assumed they used closed loop systems. This is really really bad.

Not only is this forced rush back the US deeply cruel, but if you're in the US currently on H1B you're effectively trapped in the country. If you want to go back to China, you'll need to renew your visa to come back into the US. Meaning you'll need to pony up 100k.
