Criminal justice reform has relied on notions of fairness, laws, procedure, and costs. But I do not think those things move people. A world without prisons relies on conviction and faith, something more than data. Because you must do the right thing even when it doesn't feel good.

In talking to right-wing law enforcement for decades, the common denominator is their faith and righteous. They believe they are doing what is good. This is why you cannot "talk people" out of a sincerely held belief. This is also why, I think, police abolition requires some amount of moral faith.

If ICE and police exist ont the same continuum of state force, then criticizing ICE requires examining all policing practices. Maintaining this imaginary boundary allows people to condemn ICE while preserving their investment in local policing as necessary, legitimate, and fundamentally different.

The reason why ”well actually 70% of ICE detainees don’t have criminal records” falls flat is similar to problem w/ posting mugshots of ppl arrested and jailed. Being policed alone can destroy presumption of innocence and marks people as criminals. These ICE occupations follow same logic.
