Hi, I'm the ProPublica reporter who's been tracking an unusual stat: U.S. citizens grabbed by immigration agents. I did it because the government isn’t. This is what I found.

This! 1000x this! Our practices have to adapt to make it so that there is once again a price to be paid for lying. You can't have a working democracy if that price is zero. In that case, governments no longer have to DO anything, they just have to CLAIM they have & attack anyone who says different.

I keep seeing posts telling people not to use "deportation" to describe this outrage. I don't object to alternatives, but "deportation" w/out legal basis has long been an enumerated crime against humanity (from Nuremberg to the ICC). That includes (as a paradigmatic case) the deportation of citizens

When human rights apply only to Americans it's inevitable that they eventually only apply to SOME Americans and then, eventually, none. Human rights either apply to all humans—foreign and domestic, documented and undocumented, law-abiding and criminal—or they don't exist.

When I used to try and gently explain the world we were rapidly headed for, people thought I was being paranoid. Or worse, they would try and explain why I was wrong as if it was obvious and I was subtextually just having a hard day, and would feel better in the morning.

A reminder to reporters: Because Trump tariff numbers are made-up nonsense, using the phrase “reciprocal tariffs” is lying to your audience. The phrase itself is propaganda. They are not reciprocal.

Seconding this. A shameful retreat from its journalistic responsibilities by CTV. Standing up for truth and facts is a "distraction from what we are trying to do"? What exactly is it you're trying to do if you'll back down from doing journalism at the slightest pushback? What are you even for?
