Watched the amazing Charles Bronson vehicle THE MECHANIC, and found it throbbingly gay. Then I learned that the central relationship was originally written as a gay romance before every actor alive turned it down. And now it’s about two men who never verbalize how much they obviously want to fuck.

OBSESSION: I know the horror movie hype cycle is now people going “this movie has evil in its bones and will tear your soul apart” followed by a bunch of other people going “is that it?” But buddy, this movie freaked me the fuck out. It’s a ruthless machine designed to work you over. And it does.

SHELTER: Listen, I love when Statham is in batshit BEEKEEPER mode. But this has my favorite Statham variant — grim, wounded and tender. It’s a badass-protects-child thriller with a slow, thoughtful windup and a lot of well-staged mayhem. Quite touching, and the big club finale cooks hard as hell.

THE SHEEP DETECTIVES: A lovely family whodunnit, and one that’s gratifyingly eager to deal with death and mourning in real terms. There should be movies like that for kids! Good FX, good performances, good jokes, good mystery. I didn’t think it would be for me and I was very happily surprised.

So it’s been a verrrrrry long time since I ever pressed play on a Woody Allen movie because, well, you know. And I figured fuck it and pressed play on RIFKIN’S FESTIVAL, his most recent work. I couldn’t make it a half hour. It’s so inchoate and tossed-off that it feels like an act of pure contempt.

SILVERADO is a great movie about adult men who are somehow able to make new friends.

The 90s Michael Crichton adaptation rush was absolutely incredible. You could watch a movie about dinosaurs (two of them!), a Viking actioner, a deep sea sci-fi headtrip, a movie about how the Japanese or women must be destroyed, or a movie about Laura Linney killing apes with a laser gun.
