people treat counterarguments (counter readings) to subtext as "deconfirmation" of subtext or "confirmed denial" of subtext. it's very strange. but i do think it's a culture born out of cinemasins gametheory type stuff

one has lost trust and faith in one's own ability to follow a line of reasoning with supporting evidence, everything must be spelled out directly and confirmed and added to the wiki, or it simply doesn't exist based on the off chance that it may not exist. etc

the implication is that unless a character says they are X they might not be inadvertedly feeds more into cisnormativity and heteronormativity than just accepting that queerness or transness as explored in fiction do not only exist when declared but are frames of reading

can i be frank and say the post 2010s turn of "this character is not explicitly queer & trans unless they turn to the camera and directly say their identity" which while coming from positive intentions of explicit representation which is Good has sort of had the downside of queer/trans erasure

The death of subtext is very very bad for textual representation by the way. It only reinforces and feeds into narratives of how to be queer and trans in the "proper" way, and dislocates queerness and queer readings from not-explicitly-queer texts. If something can only be read queerly in one way,

A lot of the responses to this are people being upset about pushing past the discouragement at not seeing improvement or making what they want. That's the muscle you need to develop. Tbqh, even as your art gets better, that feeling does not. It just gets more nuanced. Starting again is the skill.
