If I have to hear our City Traffic Engineer talk about stop sign warrants one more time I’m gonna scream. Since Aug, 3 middle schoolers have been hit on a bike boulevard next to school but because people don’t always stop at stops signs, it’s better to leave things as the speed-inducing status quo.

This is a topic I have tried to push for years. Kids have a right to move around on our roads exactly the same as licensed drivers. You don't need a licenses to ride your bike in the street and yet cities do little to protect youth who need to use our roads.

My entire career, I've heard street safety advocates say they wish America took car crashes as seriously as plane crashes. Wrote about how that conversation needs to shift as deregulation and defunding comes for air travel, too, and why government trust is an overlooked component of "safe systems."

Berkeley is really, really bad at designating reroutes for everyone walking and rolling (even when it’s required). Not only does a blocked path induce a deadly situation, but it’s a huge accessibility issue, and the city’s losing money by not issuing fines.

As with every serious/fatal ped or bicyclist crash, I’m just gutted by Sunday’s tragic but preventable incident where a 66-year old neighbor lost her life. When will we stop elevating driver speed & convenience over life? How can we build a future where 87-year olds have options besides driving?

In no other arena would requiring that for Americans pay for what they use get more news coverage and have required as much activism and grit to win. Americans are simply unable to grasp that driving and parking actually have a cost. Motonormativity is an overwhelming (and bad) force in the US.
