I designed this lecture on the history and politics of crime data to be an educational tool for classes and political ed. It’s organized in sections that can be taught separately if needed. And, of course, it emphasizes the early criticisms of crime data by Ida B. Wells-Barnett and W.E.B. Du Bois.

Normalize calling Kilmar Ábrego García a political prisoner. His criminalization, rearrest, and campaign to deport him to a third country aren’t legitimate by any stretch.

If I had to suggest an era to study to understand how we got here, it’d be Reconstruction. To learn about the roots of modern policing and the carceral state, how “taxpayer” became an identity, and what W.E.B. Du Bois called the “counter-revolution of property”—all in opposition to Black freedom.
