something else i love about Whisper of the Heart: the protagonists might be the two most generic looking ghibli characters. even shizuku's friends have more "main character" markers than her (glasses, freckles, etc) but the adult characters especially stick out as being more specifically designed

A beautifully drawn comic doesn't mean it's a good comic-- panelling and composition in comics is a whole other skill. You can be incredible at drawing and incredibly bad at drawing a comic at the same time. Legibility in comics doesn't even require pretty drawings in the first place.
