the parking lot is another part of FF8's Balamb that I don't really get. the pre-rendered BG is weirdly shaped, unclear if it's a parking garage or a little basement with 10 spots. there's only one small town on the island so they don't need many cars... i simplified it just to have something.

As @robino.bsky.social (who, again, has also done this, beautifully so) predicted, I was indeed planning to draw some Final Fantasy 1 monsters with their limited NES palettes. A lot of great names in this first localization. "EVILMAN" "MADPONY" and "JIMERA" are some of my favorites. #FinalFantasy

after Midgar, I started on a map of Final Fantasy VII's Nibelheim. thought it would be cool to show town and secret mansion basement all at once. could maybe fit Mt. Nibel + reactor on upper right? or maybe not. lots of mansion detail and interior for tifa + cloud's house to go, but coming along! 🗺️

i'm having fun revising old GTAs and drawing the mission paths. trying to look at how Rockstar uses their maps over the series... now i gotta figure out how the heck to make a coherent video while animating 500 different arrows.

looking at high-res scans of jp Final Fantasy VII books from @shinraarchaeology.bsky.social, can finally see that the classic Midgar renders are one sector copy/pasted with different "endzone" details near the center. also a great image of Junon's layout next to the slum, might try this area next!
