Moral Orel wouldn't have hit nearly as hard for me if the first season hadn't set up the cast as one-dimensional gag characters. using seasons 2-3 to flesh them out, retroactively demonstrating why they are the way they are, is much more resonant than if we'd seen them in 3 dimensions from the start

Kinda related, but I was drawing out some angles of Clair's place for a scrapped animatic that I made a week or so ago, and had noticed that her place only had windows to the right side of her house I was wondering for a while why that was the case, but then it hit me... It's modeled after Clair.

I love "I don't even know what that is" bc it could be read as a regular Achilles-ism but also. pep you don't let anyone in your brain. nobody knows what you're talking about

you know, I kind of especially like how the hand/paw paradox plays into this one. much like how Achilles's face is split by his pattern, it sort of befits the two sides at war within him over this. the serious little man that wants it to be real wants it all to mean something more

Achilles: *lovingly, tenderly details his trauma-informed worldview* Pepper: That's dumb as hell. I love him, Your Honor. ...Is he about to chop his hand this time?

Achilles's body language here really shows a lot; look at how his tail curls up around himself when he talks about Clair. And, when he starts getting frustrated, his tail puffs up and he bares his fangs (two things that we almost NEVER see from Achilles).

This scene seems familiar...

im never more assured that im doing a half-decent job at a character-driven story than when no one can agree which characters are in the wrong or why

made a halfhearted attempt to resist drawing this but

I mean, technically almost all of the residents struggle with escapism. Pepper with trying to fix other people's problems rather that confront his own, Mars lashing out and pushing people away, Claire burying herself in her work, Chloe shutting herself off from others. Peachy. Uh. Uhhhhh--

He wants it though. "It's okay to be weird, right?" He wants that acceptance and friendship from her. Whatever he's saying now, whatever he felt at the start, it's different for him now too. That's why he's so confused.

ALSO the fact that his positive interactions/relationships developed AFTER Mars pushed him and he accepted his "purpose" with her might just reinforce his initial thinking. Everything got better after that, right?

seems like he learned he didn’t have to try to make people like him, he could just be himself. or rather I feel like he’s REALLY CLOSE to that lesson, but he kinda took it in like…a different direction

achilles has essentially felt the loss of something he hasn’t even acknowledged the existence of. “if mars isn’t Supposed to like me, why does it hurt so bad to hear her say that she doesn’t?”

I'm not gonna let Achilles' absurdly depressing explanation for his actions stop me from noticing that Pepper is finally using Peppers in his meal.
