I'm kind of surprised by pepper's line of thinking here, bc it reads to me like he's less trying to get at something and more just trying to express his feelings. like he's had time to process the situation, and instead of it being an emergency he's kind of thinking about what it all means

I suspect it's also partially a reflex to assert some small degree of control for himself and partially recontextualize things for his own benefit, to stave off feeling like he's lost his mind

Bradbury’s 1940s-50s stories are incredible! The Golden Apples of the Sun isn’t his darkest collection — that’s prob his directly post-WWII collection, The October Country — but it’s plenty dark and whimsical and has his greatest story, “A Sound of Thunder.” Thematically, it’s salient to HFHH. 😁

I’ve read most Bradbury, and I don’t think that collection’s stories — about walking where no one expects you to be, visiting a terrifying past, being controlled by another person without knowing it, learning something that makes you too dangerous to live — are going to relax Pepper. 😬
