And a lot of us are either newly disabled due to COVID, we've had existing disabilities exacerbated BY COVID, or we ABSOLUTELY CANNOT take any sort of chances that we might catch COVID, which is STILL FATAL TO MANY and even if it's not immediately fatal, it can screw up your health permanently.

Unmitigated illness is a tool used by fascists to eliminate the groups of people they hate & have deprived of resources, while making money off those who can afford to play the pay-to-win game of for-profit healthcare. It is not too late to do better. Deprioritize your short-term discomfort for the sake of long-term justice. Wear an n95 in public spaces to protect yourself & those who are higher risk & less resourced for recover. Recognize that our resistance must be as intersectional as the impacts of fascism.

Make 2026 the year you start wearing respirators. They're much more effective than surgical masks or "face coverings", they're more comfortable, there's different fits and styles to choose from, and you can reuse them a few times before throwing them out. Also, ICE agents don't wear respirators.

Language like “substantially obscures the face” sounds neutral, but it guarantees uneven enforcement across classrooms, schools, and substitutes. That’s not hypothetical. It’s psychology.

Vague rules increase cognitive load for staff and subs. When people are unsure, they default to guessing or “correcting.” That means: • different rules on different days • repeated interrogations • students constantly explaining themselves

During an ongoing airborne pandemic, that kind of ambiguity re-pathologizes a behavior that was appropriately normalized.

Some students mask because they are immunocompromised. Some live with high-risk family members. Some don’t want to become immunocompromised. Some refuse to risk getting others sick.

No student should have to disclose medical vulnerability or defend their morality just to avoid discipline. Clear policies reduce stress. Vague policies push stress downward. We’ve already been here. People noticed then. They’re watching again. 👀

N95s can prevent more than just Covid! They stop colds, flus and other airborne illness. They’re also highly effective against pollen, pollution, wildfire smoke and environmental triggers. Many maskers haven’t been sick in years. Respirators are pretty amazing.
