For sound effects for Heros Realm, I am using a combination of Audacity and an add-on called BitCrusher, searches on OpenGameArt, LabChirp (to make those crunchy 8bit sounds), and even samples from songs I like. And RTP. I produced an evil laugh for Murzhor, Applause, Footsteps, and a whistle.
