People need to remember that going to school is a kid's life. There's all this discourse on we're doing what's good for them (many years in the future) and neglect of the fact that kids spend much of lives in school. School is life, not an optimisation centre.

The bit that the 'learning = memory' narrative misses out is that learning is an emotional as well as an intellectual pursuit. Knowledge and skills aren't enough on their own; we need to have the bravery, confidence and motivation to use them.

Last year my wife had breast cancer and a double mastectomy. This morning, for the first time ever, she was challenged in the changing rooms at the swimming pool. Her breasts were not what make her a woman - but, breasts or not, she is entitled to dignity and protection from vigilantes.

across 563 school behaviour policies, i found that notions of 'misbehaviour' coalesce with a whole constellation of linguistic features. of course, these linguistic features are not empirically connected to 'misbehaviour', but they are strongly ideologically connected.
