Five corporations control 90% of the US media market. Airlines merged from 12 major carriers in 1980 to 4 today. Four giants control 80% of meat processing. A handful of companies control the pharmaceutical industry. The evidence of corporate concentration is everywhere.

In 2017, Catherine McKenney and I traveled to Queen's Park to fight for safer streets in Ottawa-Centre. The government listened to residents. Now, Premier Ford is proposing to make our streets more dangerous. It's the wrong move for intensifying neighbourhoods.

How is warning people to respect the speed limit or pay the same fine they would pay if the police caught them mere a “tax grab”? Does Doug Ford really want to reallocate police to stopping speeding in high risk zones? Or is Ford just pro-speeding?

Ottawa City Council - myself included - need to look at Lansdowne 2.0 through this new lens. Sure, vital improvements can be made to the Lansdowne we know and love today, but how to justify $419 million? Does Ottawa have the capacity or need for two complete overhauls of major sports arenas?

From 1958: “modern Ottawa simply could not function without public transportation. Too many tight little minds try to reduce our trams and buses to bookkeeping items, … If the buses do not pay, if the street cars do not pay, then we shall have to pay for them out of the taxes.”
