I think even baby cinematography 101 level terms for techniques in games would be a little helpful for understanding what a genre is built out of so there is more discrete and intentional picking and choosing rather than copying the whole thing and hoping that the magic will come along too.

video game genre names are all pretty embarrassing but tbh my biggest real problem is we don't break down the techniques of those genres in even pretty simple ways. When you say souls-like, do you mean 'risk/reward on character death' or do you mean 'attack startup animations cannot be canceled'?
