We have the power to decide that everyone is worthy of healthcare, housing and social support. We can say that no one should have to “prove” they matter. That no one is expendable. That meeting everyone’s basic needs is more important than enriching the billionaire class.

I’m glad that the risks of meds like Gabapentin are being made clear. They’re not very effective for pain, yet pushed on patients because they’re the “non addictive” option. They can cause seizures, aphasia and dementia. We desperately need better pain management options for chronic conditions

Get involved with disability orgs already doing the work. And there are many. Listen and learn. Fill stated needs and don’t create new ones. Follow disabled people raising their voices. Listen and learn. Resist the impulse to whatabout.

If you have distanced yourself from a disabled person, it’s never a bad time to reconnect. You don’t have to do any super intense apology or give reasons. It’s enough to be like “hey, thinking of you.” That’s more than a lot of us get.

Offer specific forms of help. This not only ensures you’re only offering what you feel you can take on in the moment, it helps disabled people in your life not have to sort through the exhausting mental catalogue of all the shit that’s going wrong or undone.

Put away the “I’m protecting my peace!!” and “I don’t owe anyone anything!!” hyperindividualism. Learn the difference between healthy boundaries and self-comforting impulses that put wedges in relationships with disabled people. Keep inviting us even if we decline or cancel. Keep the door open.

—that can include your own fragility and mortality! It can mean learning how to support during a panic attack, meltdown, manic episode. Things people don’t like to deal with and pull away from. If you are serious about helping disabled folks, that means doing this uncomfortable stuff.

Do you make the effort to include disabled people in your organizing and social activities? Do you work to make yourself a safe person? This can mean personal discomfort, and it’s well past time to get used to that. Things like wearing a mask, learning to sit with upsetting feelings—

If you don’t have the means, and no judgment, so many of us don’t, that means it’s a great time to examine how you interact with disabled people in your life. Do you do that super unhelpful “tell me if you need anything” thing, or do you actively participate?

It shouldn’t be! That’s the reason we have been rallying to save the imperfect system we have (had). But for the moment, it’s the reality. We will work to change that. But we have to survive in the meantime.

If a person can’t work, medical costs just became absolutely prohibitive. If you care about disability justice at all and you have the ability, it is now a moral imperative to help people meet needs. I am not exaggerating. This may be the difference between life or death.
