Opened the doggy dna results today and got a fun surprise. We thought Raven was a chonky chiweenie but even though she’s got the long body and epic side-eye, she’s less than a quarter weenie. Her mother was a retriever/cattle dog/pit mix! Did think she looked like a small lab in a lot of ways. ☺️

Put out enough fires at work to be able to (mostly) unplug for a week and a half. I am greatly looking forward to catching up on some correspondence, some art and personal projects, and reading through this year's yuletide stories. Will do a rec thread in a bit as is custom! A red grouse (Lagopus scotica) I encountered in the Pentland Hills near Edinburgh last summer, demonstrating its very human-like alarm call. He seemed extremely cross that I'd had the audacity to ride my mountain bike across his patch and chased me along the trail for quite some distance.

A male rock ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) in winter plumage. Ptarmigan is from Gaelic 'tarmachan' meaning "croaker". The p- was added when people mistakenly assumed it was a Greek word. A bird forever warning people: "A werewolf!" (just in case of werewolves).

I applied to be on the local climate action plan committee. There were seven people for six seats. By just showing up, I kept a conservative conspiracy theorist from getting on. 18mo ago, I noticed she & cronies were against a new elementary school. I joined up with the pro-school voices. We won.
