I would have never tried to make my epic fantasy books fit in the trad pub mold. The window of acceptability for non-binary stories is incredibly narrow and you’re always judged on how well you live up to cis ideas of what a trans story should be

Every time I try to write a Shadow Daddy I wind up with a Theater Kid

When I was writing for trad, I would go to the library and grab the ten biggest books in the last two years for the genre I wanted to write in, read them, write a fast draft, and re-read them before editing to make sure I “got” it. And it worked! It got me an agent and multiple trad deals!

This is why physical media is still so important.
