The fact that large parts of the German media landscape “reported” on this White nationalist fever dream of a speech by Rubio as merely reaffirming the transatlantic alliance is so far removed from reality that it truly makes me speechless.

Read all of @ruthdeyermond.bsky.social dissecting Rubio’s siren song and the harsh reality underneath. Nothing has changed since last year. If anything, things have developed in a more radical fashion. And they will continue to do so if we fall for Rubio’s catnip.

Rubio has a personal interest in saying nice(ish) things to Europe; the Trump administration as a whole has a strong interest in Europe not acting on the rupture the White House has created. None of this means an actual change of direction in US foreign policy.

The most important thing about Rubio's speech, though, is that it's completely irrelevant as a guide to Trump administration policy.

At last year's MSC, while Vance was hectoring Europe, other Americans were trying to persuade policymakers and commentators not to take it all too seriously. Many were eager to buy what these Europe-whisperers were selling. But it was, and is, an illusion.

Europeans still have a hard time acknowledging the fact that after Putin‘s Russia began denouncing Europe as “Gayropa”, the US is now joining the chorus of the declinists in terms of “civilizational erasure”. Europe is entering a moment of strategic loneliness. Better face it quickly.
