what really gets me every damn time is why "AI" products built with children in mind are rarely vetted or regulated. even simple household appliances go through so much testing, assurance, & regulatory process and now the industry is lobbying so hard, we've regressed back to a decade

It’s widely known (and, I think, pretty uncontroversial) that learning requires effort — specifically, if you don’t have to work at getting the knowledge, it won’t stick. Even if an LLM could be trusted to give you correct information 100% of the time, it would be an inferior method of learning it.

It would be nice if the people in charge of the Bank of Canada didn't have brains so melted by finance-speak that they think we can "productivity" our way out of an affordability crisis that in huge part was created by decades of not building enough affordable housing.

As Langdon Winner put so well 40 years ago, don't fall into the trap of accepting "RISK" as a good framework for these conversations. Business interests love framing their violence in terms of "risks & rewards" bc as a society, we love to heroize & reward risk-takers. Talk instead about "HAZARD."

I agree totally. These "basics" would be revolutionary, actually. Even more so if they were designed to ensure the people using them can robustly be heard on the other end, and to require and support folks/institutions on the other end(s) to do the work that hearing and exercising judgment require.
