The real problem with this Pipeline MOU, is that it's incredibly divisive. Read it through this lens: it makes Canada and Alberta equal partners, and the rest of Canada (other provinces and First Nations) lesser players. Look at BSKY tonight and see how much fighting it's already lead to.

Lets face it, this is a good day for oil companies, businesses, and those in the oil sector. Its a bad day for the environment and for reconciliation with Indigenous nations whose lands this thing will go over. As Blanchet stated, this is the official end of Canada's climate commitments.

It was a much tighter discount. Eg $40 EPCs against $50 policy price. Now the gap has widened so much they’re basically disconnected. Oversupply of secondary credits from lax benchmarks and additional policies.

Alberta had already agreed to the $170 pricing schedule. Then they retracted support this year. Now we're pretending we're getting something new from them in exchange for dismantling a whole suite of regulations which would have delivered way more reductions. Also Smith's support won't last long

Re-upping this as talk of strengthening the industrial carbon price resurfaces in the forthcoming AB-Fed MOU. Raising the headline carbon price does very little when tradable credits are oversupplied and trading at $29 per tonne… To strengthen the market will require tightening the benchmarks.

And, for those who jump up and down and say the industrial price will push renewables, I have two answers: 1) does this seem like a fed govt that is in the mood to fight for renewables? 2) show me where renewables are in substantive commitments of the MOU. Nowhere. Natgas and nukes.

Giving Alberta an exemption to the Clean Electricity Standard means the policy is DOA. There’s no way SK isn’t asking for the same thing, as they restart coal plants. One Canadian economy? Nope. Likely scenario is no electricity regs at all, meaning we’re back to Harper-era policy.

Something that is easy to forget in all the "Carney is a political genius / Carney is a political naif" argle bargle is that climate policies matter. Environmental regulations matter. Getting rid of them may or may not achieve a political end — but it's guaranteed to have real-world implications.

But it isn't a simple MOU. It also has put out a carveout on CER for Alberta only, delayed our methane regs by 5 years, put in a precedence for ignoring both the Fisheries and the Species at Risk act, and threatens to remove a 55 year old tanker ban on the BC north coast. It's all kinda of... a lot.
