I’ve had this debate in class with STEM students before. They NEED to believe that eugenics and scientific racism etc are things of the past and are ‘pseudosciences’ because ‘science is objective’ and the ‘scientific method defends from bias.’ It’s a dangerous way to think.

I describe it as such as a historian of disability because I want to remind scientists and the world that the history of science IS the history of eugenics, scientific racism and medical racism, and more. I’m not comforting them with the idea that it was a ‘pseudoscience.’ This is your history.

In my U.S. Civil Rights Movements class, we spend a lot of time thinking about historical memory. When movements get reduced to a few iconic leaders, the collective labor that made change possible disappears from view. It also obscures an important lesson: collective action is effective & difficult.

In conclusion, many behavioral scientists and psychologists are asking important questions that cut across identity and challenge the norms around surveying predominantly white populations. Word up to @mwkraus.bsky.social @neillewisjr.bsky.social @cydneydupree.bsky.social and others! ✨

I'm really proud of this paper I wrote with my grad student proposing that children's racial biases are driven in part by racial differences in social status. Part of making the world a better place for children of color is ending racial inequity.

The takeaway isn’t “don’t confront.” Instead: 1. confront independently 2. don’t single out the target 3. Effective allyship isn’t an identity—it’s a practice judged by impact, not intent.

That emotional burden changes how the ally is perceived. When allies offload the moment: - They are seen as less deserving of status - Marginalized people are less interested in working with them - Less likely to want them leading DEI efforts

Being singled out by an ally during a confrontation puts the targeted person on the spot. They’re suddenly responsible for: • explaining harm • managing emotions • risking backlash That’s not always empowering. We find that it’s added emotional burden at exactly the wrong moment.

Well-intentioned allyship can backfire. When allies confront bias by turning to the targeted employee in the moment (“Can you explain why that was offensive?”), it often increases stress—and reduces respect for the ally.
