TTC ran a “pilot project” to track the number of cars illegally passing streetcars at stops: “Preliminary data indicates that near-miss incidents may be very pervasive and that there is likely merit to developing a technology-based solution to this problem” Shocker.

It's always interesting what people considered notable about a city in the past. This west-facing view of the interchange between Highway 401 and Dufferin Street was sold on postcards circa the late 1960s. From the Larry Becker Collection.

Reminder that Carney has cut funding for Natural Resources Canada, Environment and Climate Change Canada, Indigenous and Northern Affairs, and Indigenous Services. And he has rolled back climate protections, abandoned emissions targets, and is building more pipelines.

I feel like you could win a bet by asking "by distance, what is the nearest NHL team to Sri Lanka" and then drop the answer "the Edmonton Oilers" (via r/hockey post, "Closest NHL franchise to every point on earth")

Notable quote here from former cop Councillor Jon Burnside re: Chow and the police. And it’s true: after that brief budget spat in 2024, she’s given the police everything they’ve asked for in the budget process.

Toronto was once home to hundreds of urban horses. For tomorrow's World Horse Day, here are a selection of hardworking municipal steeds from the early twentieth century.

Trying to exploit a horrific event to make Torontonians more scared of their city than they should be, so you can try to make up a point or two in the polls, is pretty gross.

I am angry and upset that my kids and my neighbours were put at risk because of gun violence in our quiet and polite neighbourhood. But I am outraged that two completely innocent people have been killed by traffic violence, and nobody seems to care at all.

Two killed in Toronto by gun violence and the city is outraged. Two killed by traffic violence and nobody notices.
Toronto had a rough weekend, with worldwide coverage of a shooting in my neighbourhood. But when a driver runs a red light and kills two pedestrians, it's crickets all round.

On this date in 1858, the cornerstone of the Crystal Palace was laid. This exhibition hall was built for Provincial Agricultural Exhibition of Upper Canada. It would be moved to the Exhibition Grounds in 1878 and was destroyed by fire in 1906.

Incredible Wall Street Journal reporting on how this war succeeded in making the Iranian people rise up…to support hardliners within the regime. Secular women showing up to rallies to change “We are the soldiers of Seyyed Mojtaba,” things of that nature.

Toronto and Vancouver are having issues with cost / policing on pedestrian streets. How does it work in Montreal? Looks like Wellington Street costs about $900,000 for 1.3 km car-free for almost 4 months. Police exist but no “extra” presence. The street is not a major security concern.
