On this date in 1823, an ad was placed in the Upper Canada Gazette requesting proposals and prices “for the sinking of a well, stoning and sinking a pump therein, in the most approved manner, at the Market Square of the said town, for the convenience of the public.”

On this date in 1803, the following ad appeared in the Upper Canada Gazette - "WANTED, A QUANTITY OF PINE BOARDS, SCANTLING, STONES AND LIME FOR BUILDING A CHURCH IN THIS TOWN". These materials would be used to construct St. James, the first church building in York.

On this date in 1890, Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, visited Toronto on his way home from India. He would later become Governor-General and the namesake for Prince Arthur Street and Connaught Street.

On this date, the Royal Opera House presented a musical jubilee and lecture to commemorate the “Centenary of Moore”. Thomas Moore was a popular poet and songwriter who had visited Toronto and mentioned York in one of his poems.

On this date in 1882, the first alligator in Canada arrived at Harry Piper’s Zoo on Front Street West near the current site of the Royal York. The 12-foot gator was a gift from a Florida visitor who was impressed by the zoo and decided to make a contribution.

On this date in 1834, D’Arcy Boulton died. He was the namesake of Boulton Street and D’Arcy Street. He had been Attorney-General of Upper Canada and spent three years as a prisoner of war in France during the Napoleonic Wars.
