On this day in 1961, CTV launched as Canada's first private TV network. The first program to air was a documentary about the new network. After CBC objected to the original name Canadian Television Network, it became known simply as CTV with no official expanded meaning.

On this day in 1913, Eugene O'Keefe died in Toronto. Born in Ireland in 1827, he bought the Victoria Brewery in Toronto in 1861. Three decades later he incorporated it as the O'Keefe Brewery Company of Toronto Limited. Using his fortune, he built five churches in Toronto.

On this day in 1990, the Canadian Tribute to Human Rights was unveiled in Ottawa by the Dalai Lama. Designed by Montreal artist Melvin Charney, it features the words "Equality", "Dignity" and "Rights" in English, French and 73 Indigenous languages.

On this day in 2017, Monty Hall died. Born in 1921 in Winnipeg, he is best-known for hosting Let's Make A Deal from 1968 to 1976. The Monty Hall Problem, a conundrum involving game theory and psychology was named after him.

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day honours and remembers the children who were forced into Canada's Residential School system. It was first observed as Orange Shirt Day in 2013 and was elevated to a statutory holidy for federal workers in 2021.

On this day in 2012, Barbara Ann Scott died. Born in Ottawa in 1928, she became known as Canada's Sweetheart. She won an Olympic gold in figure skating, two World Championships, two European Championships and two North American Championships between 1945 and 1948.

Happy birthday to Diane Dufresne, born on this day in 1944 in Montreal! One of French Canada's most celebrated singers, she is a member of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. She has received the Governor General's Performing Arts Award, the Order of Canada and the Legion of Honour.

Happy birthday to Len Cariou, born on this day in Saint Boniface, Manitoba! He gained fame as Sweeney Todd in the original cast of the musical. In his career, he won a Tony and Canadian Film Award. From 2010 to 2024, he starred as Henry Reagan on Blue Bloods.

On this day in 1884, a construction train going over the Kicking Horse Pass lost control and went down the pass. A spur track was constructed for runaway trains but it had a large rock at the end of it. The locomotive hit the rock, three men were killed and dozens were injured.

On this day in 2003, Hurricane Juan made landfall near Halifax as a Category 2. It generated waves 20 metres high. About 31% of residential homes in Halifax suffered some degree of damage. It also caused extensive damage in Halifax Harbour and killed six people.

Happy birthday to Dave Andreychuk, born on this day in 1963 in Hamilton! In his Hall of Fame NHL career, he won one Stanley Cup. At his retirement, he held the record for most NHL career powerplay goals at 274 (now second-most). He had 1,338 points in 1,639 games.

On this day in 1962, Alouette 1 was launched. It was the first Canadian satellite, and the first satellite not constructed by the USA or Soviet Union. It investigated the ionosphere. The mission lasted for 10 years, and the satellite will remain in orbit for 1000 years.
