On this day in 2005, the Civil Marriage Act received Royal Assent and legalized same-sex marriage nationwide. At the time, every province and territory had legalized it except Alberta, NWT, Nunavut and PEI. Canada was the fourth country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage

On this day in 1885, the Chinese Immigration Act was passed. It put a head tax of $50 on most Chinese immigrants. The tax was increased to $100 in 1900 and $500 in 1903. From 1923 to 1947, a new Chinese Immigration Act banned nearly all immigration from China. 📸 LAC

On this day in 1873, British Columbia joined Confederation after Canada agreed to take on its debts and to build a railroad to connect the province with Eastern Canada. Delays in finishing the railroad nearly led to BC seceding in 1878. The railroad was finished in 1885.

On this day in 1892, Dick Irvin was born in Hamilton. A gifted player in his Hall of Fame career, he became one of the greatest coaches in NHL history. He won four Stanley Cups with Toronto and Montreal and won a then-record 692 games as a coach. 📸 NHL

I am at Îles-de-Boucherville National Park. This is the farthest east I’ve ever been. While I sometime get anxious on this trip, I’m enjoying sharing the journey with everyone. This trip has pushed me way outside my comfort zone, and that’s a good thing 🙂 Onward east!
