On this day in 1914, Canadian Jimmy Duffy won the Boston Marathon. His first requests after he won were a cigarette and a beer. One year later on April 23, as a member of the Canadian Army, he fought at the Second Battle of Ypres, and was killed.

On this day in 1949, Toller Cranston was born in Hamilton. A highly influential figure skater, he is credited with bringing a new level of artistry to men's figure skating. He won an Olympic bronze medal and won every Canadian championship from 1971 to 1976. He died in 2015.

On this day in 1959, Maurice Duplessis died. Born in 1890 in Trois-Rivières, Quebec, he served as the Premier of Quebec from 1936 to 1939 and 1944 to 1959. Known as Le Chef, his death sparked the beginning of The Quiet Revolution in the province.

With longer walks every morning, Berton asked for a raincoat in case of bad weather. He hopes you all like the one he chose.

On April 19, 1904, a night watchman discovered a fire coming from Toronto's E&S Currie Neck Wear Factory while out on a night patrol. Fueled by high winds, the fire destroyed over 100 buildings by the time it was out. This is the story of The Great Toronto Fire. 🧵 1/8

Jenny Pike began her photography career at Eaton's, and her skill eventually took her to London, England where she developed some of the first images of D-Day in 1944. She then became a police darkroom technician and even did some film work. This is her story. 🧵 1/7

On this day in 1948, Gérard Côté won his fourth Boston Marathon, the most of any Canadian. He previously won the Marathon in 1939, 1940 and 1942, setting a course record each time. In 264 races in his career, he won 112 times and had 56 second-place finishes.

Through the winter Berton and I averaged 3 km in walks a day (three 1 km walks) This morning I took him on a 3.6 km walk as we work our way up to 6 km walks every morning to go with the 1 km walks in the afternoon and evening. Needless to say he is tuckered this morning

On this day in 1977, Canadian Jerome Drayton won the Boston Marathon. He remains the last Canadian to win the Men's Open Division Since 1977, Canadian marathoners have won the Women's Open Division once (1980) and the Men's Wheelchair Division four times (1984, 1986, 1987, 2012)

On this day in 1898, Canadian Ronald MacDonald won the second Boston Marathon. He was the first of 15 Canadians to win the Men's Open Division of the Marathon from 1898 to 1977. From 1897 to 1917, Canadians won seven Boston Marathons.
