On this day in 1985, Mike Bossy became the first NHL player to score 50 goals in eight straight seasons. He finished his career with nine consecutive 50 goal seasons, which remains a record to this day. His .762 goals per game average is also an NHL record.

On this day in 1984, Danger Bay premiered on CBC. Starring Donnelly Rhodes as Dr. Grant "Doc" Roberts, it often focused on environmental issues. The Vancouver Aquarium was featured in almost every episode. It earned 15 Gemini nominations during its six season run.

On this day in 1918, Red Storey was born in Barrie, Ontario. He won two Grey Cups with the Toronto Argos, and officiated hockey, lacrosse and football. He is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame and Canada's Sports Hall of Fame. He died in 2006.

On this day in 1946, Richard Bell was born in Toronto. As a pianist, he performed with Janis Joplin and her Full Tilt Boogie Band. He was also The Band's keyboardist in the 1990s. He also did session work with the Cowboy Junkies, Bob Dylan and Bruce Cockburn. He died in 2007.

On this day in 1918, Milt Schmidt was born in Kitchener, Ontario. In his Hall of Fame NHL career, he won two Stanley Cups and the Hart Trophy. He interrupted his career to serve in the Second World War. As GM of the Bruins, he led the team to two more Stanley Cups in the 1970s.

Happy birthday to Dick Irvin Jr., born on this day in 1932 in Calgary! From 1966 to 1999, he worked on Hockey Night in Canada. He has written six books, and received the Order of Canada, the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award and is a member of the Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

On this day in 2019, Ted Lindsay died. Born in 1925, he won four Stanley Cups and the Art Ross in his Hall of Fame career. He played a pivotal role in improving the lives of NHL players through the creation of a Players' Association.

On this day in 1982, Bertha Wilson became the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada. She served until January 1991. For her service to Canada, she earned the Order of Canada, and was a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. She died in 2007.

On this day in 2021, Walter Gretzky died. Born in Canning, Ontario in 1938, he helped many local, provincial and national charities including the CNIB Foundation and the SCORE Program. He also wrote two books and earned three honorary degrees.

On this day in 2021, Chris Schultz died. Born in 1960 in Burlington, ON he played for the Dallas Cowboys from 1983 to 1985 and the Toronto Argos from 1986 to 1994. He won a Grey Cup, and was a two-time All-Star in his Hall of Fame career. He worked as a sportscaster with TSN.

Happy birthday to Patrick Roach, born on this day in 1969 in Halifax! Best-known for playing Randy on Trailer Park Boys, he has also appeared on This Hour Has 22 Minutes and Swearnet as himself and Swearman. He has won one Gemini.

On this day in 1994, John Candy died. Born on Oct. 31, 1950 in Toronto, he became a Canadian icon. He rose to fame on SCTV and had a successful film career through the 1980s and early 1990s. He won two Emmys, a Grey Cup and has a star on Canada's Walk of Fame.

On this day in 1954, Catherine O'Hara was born in Toronto. A Canadian comedy icon, she received two Emmys, a Golden Globe, a Governor General's Performing Arts Award, the Order of Canada and a star on Canada's Walk of Fame. She died on Jan. 30, 2026.

On this day in 1910, an avalanche in British Columbia's Rogers Pass killed 58 men working to clear a railroad line. It buried 400 metres of track and threw a 91-ton locomotive over 15 metres. The only survivor was locomotive fireman Billy Lachance. 📸 Revelstoke Museum

On this day in 1901, Wilbur R. Franks was born in Weston, Ontario. In 1940, he developed the first G-suit for pilots. All suits worn by air force pilots, astronauts and cosmonauts are based off his original design. He also did extensive cancer research. He died in 1986.

Happy birthday to Nellie Cournoyea, born on this day in 1940 in Aklavik, Northwest Territories. She served as the sixth premier of the Northwest Territories from 1991 to 1995. She was the first Indigenous woman to lead a provincial or territorial government in Canada.
