Pierre Berton allegedly said "A Canadian is someone who knows how to make love in a canoe." And it seems to be an accurate statement. In a 2013 poll, 15% of Canadians said they had engaged in a sex act in a canoe. But did Berton actually say it? This is the story. 🧵 1/4

On this day in 1903, Charles Foulkes was born. Raised in London, Ontario, he began his military career in 1926. On May 5, 1945, he accepted the surrender of German forces in the Netherlands. He served as Chief of the General Staff from 1945 to 1951 and died in 1969.

The names of Canada's provinces and territories come from many sources. Some names come from Indigenous words, while others are named for royalty, and some are named for where settlers came from. This is how each province and territory was named! 🧵 1/15

On this day in 1912, Renaude Lapointe was born in Disraeli, Quebec. As a journalist, she worked for Le Soleil, La Presse and Time Magazine. She served in the Senate from 1971 to 1987 and was the first French-Canadian woman to be Speaker of the Senate. She died in 2002.

Canadian George Woolf was one of the greatest jockeys of his era. Called Iceman for his calm demeanor in races, he won 97 major stakes before his life was tragically cut short. His 1938 victory with Seabiscuit over War Admiral remains legendary. This is his story. 🧵 1/10

On this day in 1928, Frank Anderson was born in Edmonton. He won two gold medals at the Chess Olympiad and was a Canadian Chess Champion. Illness prevented him from earning the grandmaster title but he was the first Canadian-born International Master. He died in 1980.

On this day in 1962, Babe Dye died. Born in 1898 in Hamilton, he played in the NHL from 1919 to 1930 and led the league in scoring twice. He won one Stanley Cup in his Hall of Fame career. Learn more in my Deep Dive 👇 buff.ly/5pnf8gB

After she married into the wealthy Eaton family, Flora McCrea refused to live a life without purpose. A former nurse, she helped guide the Eaton's company, fundraised for many causes and helped many. For this she was called Mrs. Canada. This is her story. 🧵 1/10

On this day in 1933, Jack Pickford died. Born in 1896 in Toronto, he was the younger brother of Mary Pickford. A popular silent film actor in the 1910s, he was known for his party lifestyle. His last words were: "I have lived more than most men, and I am tired — so tired!"

On this day in 1883, Duncan Gillis was born in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. He competed for Canada at the 1912 Summer Olympics and won silver in the hammer throw. He was the first person to serve as Canada's flag bearer during the Olympic opening ceremonies. He died in 1963.

On this day in 1986, Mike Bossy recorded his 500th goal in his 647th game. At the time, he was the fastest NHL player to reach the milestone. He had 573 goals in 752 games in his career. Bossy now ranks behind Wayne Gretzky (575 games) and Mario Lemieux (608 games).

On this day in 1929, the Niagara Falls Treaty was signed between Canada and the United States. It pledged to preserve the natural beauty of the falls by improving water distribution, setting minimum flow requirements, and limiting controlled diversions for power generation.

On this day in 1860, Dugald Campbell Patterson was born in Scotland. He came to Canada in the late-1880s. He was one of the foremost engineers of his era. In 1915, while supervising the construction of a submarine, he suffered an injury that left him paralyzed. He died in 1931.

On this day in 1906, Canada's first theatre dedicated exclusively to showing movies, The Ouimetoscope, opened in Montreal. The theatre was an immediate success and quickly expanded from 500 to 1,200 seats with air conditioning. It operated until it closed in 1924.

On this day in 1893, Barney Stanley was born in Paisley, Ontario. In his hockey career he won a Stanley Cup and recorded 143 goals and 216 points in 217 PCHA/WCHL games. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1963 and died in 1971.

Happy birthday to Becky Kellar, born on this day in Hagersville, Ontario! In her hockey career, she won three Olympic gold and four World Championships. In International competitions she had six goals and 22 points in 55 games.
