Very sad news. Gail Martin (1944-2026) was a figure in developmental biology. She pioneered the field of ES cells. A great colleague, a friend and a lovely person.

Sometimes I forget how insanely horrible my first experience serving on an NIH study section was until I give details to people I haven't told before. But I still stand: if you identify a clear bias in the review process - bring it up. Even if it means the SRO shouts at you. Worth it every time.

5.5yrs into being an Assistant Prof, and I still feel like I don't know how to do this job: how do I manage being a scientist, mentor, administrator, writer, businesswoman, cheerleader, critic, therapist, analyst, coordinator, colleague, etc all at once?? Oh btw, I'm a mom of two also.
