I answer this every time, and I’m happy to answer it again; detention is a tool of deportation. The goal is not to keep people detained indefinitely, although some people may be held for months, and in some cases even years. Once detained, deportation becomes dramatically easier for the government.

The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE and Border Patrol, is using a broad web of surveillance tools — purchased as its budget has ballooned under this administration — to monitor, apprehend and intimidate the people it seeks to deport and the U.S. citizens critical of its policies.

Rough thought, but some of the so-called "critiques" of the "performativity" of using knitted hats and yarn sales to fund mutual aid in the face of ICE occupation hinge on the organizers being women and performing stereotypically gendered work. Programs that publicly ID disabled people to the police falsely assume that police won't do police brutality because they know a person is disabled. Police kill people who are clearly in mental health crisis. There's a reason why I don't write short articles celebrating these state laws.

Lots of regular degular, never-done-an-activism folks have been activated in recent months and are working alongside a bunch of seasoned, die-hard, been-tired-for-ten-years-or-more organizers, and you don't know all of those stories bc most people are moving with a bit of discretion in these times.
