I’ve seen few people situate the ID cards debate in the current anti-immigration climate, highlight the potential dangers for the system to be used aggressively down the line (also against other minority groups, like Trans people) and make the moral argument, as @iandunt.bsky.social does here:

Kind of feels like a big deal that a Reform/Brexit Party former MEP has been convicted of taking bribes to promote Russian interests in Ukraine, and it feels like a bigger deal that this isn’t being treated as the major scandal that it clearly is.

"How many traitors are in Farage's new party?" would, I suggest be a better line than Digital ID. To beat Reform, make wavering voters ashamed to back them.

I’m deeply concerned about recent racist attacks in our capital city.

An identity war is, quite literally, the worst possible issue on which to attach it. "Let's roll IDs out, so we can more easily spot who is not part of the in-group" is the most damaging imaginable start to this conversation.

It's really important for the media and public to understand what's happening here as it's the same playbook as the MAGA coalition. Find all the fringe groups who don't trust institutions for whatever reason and promise them to deliver what they want so they build enough of a coalition to gain power

This is because Reform relies on building a coalition of disordered counterpublics reacting against distrusted institutions, and the anti-vax community is part of that, so he knows he needs to keep is vague to avoid upsetting them.

It is possible to cherish the BBC as an institution while also saying that BBC News is failing very badly, day after day, in its duty to inform and that it always fails in a right-wing direction. It desperately needs to recover its integrity
