Instead of being offered empathy, care, or privacy, our neighbor had to endure callousness and gawking as she underwent labor on the courtroom bench while still shackled.Judge Devin Robinson cleared the audience from the courtroom, but elected not to clear the staff. ADA Jordan Rossman got up to take a closer look. The court reporter took photos on her phone. Judge Janice Robinson cracked jokes with court personnel in the adjoining courtroom.Our neighbor gave birth while awaiting arraignment for low-level charges after she was arrested for trespassing on the roof of her own building. After initially agreeing to dismiss the case, ADA Rossman changed his mind. Judge Devin Robinson refused to entertain dismissing her case “in the interest of justice.”This ongoing cruelty is an encapsulation of all the ways our system prioritizes punishment over all else.
