Edrioasteroids are a strange echinoderm. I always think of them as a starfish/barnacle combination. They tend to attach to hard ground or encrust on brachiopods. This is Belochthus orthokolus from the Ordovician Verulam Fm. near Brechin, Ontario. #FossilFriday

Filamentous cyanobacteria, Marpolia spissa, from the Cambrian Marjum Fm. of Utah. This specimen is only about 5mm long. #FossilFriday

I love soft tissue preservation in fossils. The Mazon Creek fossil beds, located south of Chicago, preserves fossils in ironstone (siderite) concretions. This is a shrimp, Belotelson magister, from the Carboniferous Francis Creek Shale. #FossilFriday

Crinoids may look like flowers, but they are animals - echinoderms just like starfish and sand dollars. The calyx (bulb) is made of calcite plates. This Uperocrinus from the Mississippian Burlington Lm. is missing the long stem and arms, but you can see where they were attached. #FossilFriday

Yes! Crinoids are sometimes called sea lilies because they look like under water flowers. This Platycrinites has the arms and stem preserved. #FossilFriday

This is one of the most stunning crinoids in my collection. Gennaeocrinus mourantae from the Devonian Arkona Fm. of Ontario. A large pocket of these were found decades ago and very few have been found since. #FossilFriday

Petoskey stone is a fossil coral and Michigan's state stone. This is from the Devonian Rockport quarry north of Alpena. Most Petoskey stone is found on the beach and rounded smooth. #FossilFriday

These are two of the best Gogia specimens in my collection. You can see the simple arms spiraling. Other Gogia species have straight arms or different holdfast structures. #FossilFriday

My favorite crinoids are in starburst position. Some people call it "faceplant" for obvious reasons. This is a small Dichocrinus multiplex from the Gilmore City Fm. of Iowa. The delicate pinnules on each arm would filter the water for food. #FossilFriday

Most echinoderms disarticulated or fell apart quickly into small skeletal elements after death. Fossil starfish are very rare. This is a single arm of Gordonaster brassfieldensis from the early Silurian Brassfield Fm. of Kentucky. It's only about 1 cm long. #FossilFriday

This was one of the first trilobites I prepped. It was before I had a professional prep room, so I used dental picks. This is just a molted head, but the Schizochroal eye with individual lenses is stunning. This is an Eldredgeops from the Devonian Silica Shale of Ohio. #FossilFriday
