This is really well done because I think the “normal” vs “abnormal” divide is helpful to ponder when it comes down to deciding *how* to fight. It’s good the Dems decided to fight this, it’s bad their strategy doesn’t quite fit the scenario as yet.

Government shutdowns are dumb. The way funding works is a policy choice, not inherent to the Constitution. Congress could pass a law today that automatically authorizes spending in perpetuity at the levels of the most recent appropriations bill. This is how other countries do it!

Briefing isn’t exactly a deep and wide situation. It might be surprising who is watching the news just like us to figure out what comes next.

I just don’t know. This better work but then again what does work here even mean? What do they want out of this? How does it end? I’m not seeing a plan that makes any sense from anyone on either side of the aisle.

Ok so here’s my shutdown take: I think the moral situation has not changed since the spring, they shouldn’t rubber stamp this government, not the abuse of congressional powers, not the abuse of presidential powers. But I don’t trust the leaders of the Democratic Party to effectively make this case.

Is the idea that Americans will support shutting down the government over “saving healthcare costs” but not all the other illegal, unconstitutional actions this administration is pursuing? Because I don’t love the message that this is about a policy disagreement.

It is egregious, but this is the normal framing for a normal minority party making normal policy demands in a shutdown standoff, which is how Democrats have chosen to present it. The whole ACA focus has made it easier, not harder, to push a "blame Dems for the shutdown" narrative.

To all federal workers. As long as I have been in public policy funding of the federal government has been used as bargaining chip. I am sorry. Thank you for your service and I promise to support policies that would put an end to using the government’s payroll as a bargaining chip.

I kind of think the shock and awe strategy upfront was successful psychologically because they have half of us perpetually afraid of immediate rapid escalation and the other half confident every day it doesn’t happen in x area it will be impossible or unlikely moving forward. Not sure it’s either.

My take on “stop being greedy” re clowning is we know she already finished 1.5 other albums (rep vault and debut tv) and she filmed *something* on tour so it’s not strange to wonder and hypothesize when she will release all that. It’s not like anyone is asking her to work extra hard or something.

If any other president in all of history said the military should use American cities as a training ground he would be removed from office that same day. The hardest thing to tolerate in all this is how relatively silent elected democrats are. It’s ridiculous.

Now might be a good time for Democrats to remind people that when they return to power they will not hesitate to prosecute people who murder civilians.

Not sure I love “the military isn’t going to help them do fascism” takes when this is where we already are in less than a year.

The "liberals have to learn how to live with people we diagree with" line kinda stops making sense in a world where the central disagreement is whether disagreeing with them should be allowed at all

This site can definitely lean pessimistic to an almost fascist fanfic extreme but there is also a reactionary impulse re: declaring what they can’t do or won’t get away with moving in the future which I don’t find as compelling either once compared to facts on the ground.

The thing about the boats in the Caribbean is that it’s is a form of grooming for future larger scale abuses.

I fully understand how difficult it is to remain focused on any one particular atrocity but this really ought to be a serious scandal and people need to pay heavy prices for this
