They have conned us into feeling that those offline skills of friendship, support, community building, making soup, *picking up litter*... all those are less important than putting some meaningless badge on your social media profile. And they're not. They are the thing.

But I think social media companies have essentially deliberately conned us into posting and raising awareness in general spaces that are hostile, as a form of activist cosplay.

You can absolutely do that in a closed online community. In fact, that is one of the most beautiful things possible. To create a closed, invitation-only space or a space with some bar to entry where people can feel safe to express themselves and will know that they are understood and loved.

I'm not happy about this, but we are not living in as progressive a time right now as we were twenty years ago. Which means those older skills of political action are even more valuable. Forming communities of care, support and sustenance. Creating a safe little world within the bigger world.
