I had a hard rule against these. There’s nothing wrong with including history where it’s relevant, but cribbing from Wikipedia is not an interesting or engaging by way to hook a reader who came to find out if *this* game is good or not.

General message: let me adjust my settings in your game before you throw me into an in-engine scene or gameplay, I know you think it's exciting and cinematic but you're working against yourself if shit is stuttering along or the resolution is wonky.

This is a cool notion. My first encounter with this was a Dark Forces custom map where the modder redrew the Imperial officer you had to shoot at the end of the mission to look like Captain Picard, so that was 30 years ago, easy

Today also marks my 27th year in the games industry. I interviewed at Turbine for a "Content Intern" position on Asheron's Call 1. The whole studio had opening night tickets to TPM, and took me along. While in line, Content Lead Eri Izawa told me, "The job is basically yours if you want it."

Did not expect #SWC2027 to sell out so quickly. I remember 2019 Chicago still had 4 Day passes available months before the event. I thought maybe they'd sell out in a week, but not an hour! Picked up individual day passes, and booked a hotel, but I've got plenty of time for options.

@garrettmartin.bsky.social has been a force in criticism on video games. I remember when I first read his stuff when I was at GamePro and he wrote for us, and it was clear he was good at his work. Turned out he was good for the entire industry. Helluva legacy, and he deserves far, far better.

No, and it's not an industry for older writers either. I've been writing professionally since 2014 and I've never been on staff anywhere, nor are there any jobs really left. The few that happen are tenuous at best and not really amenable to someone in their 40s.
