The buzzy success of multiple horror things right now — Widow’s Bay! Obsession! Backrooms! and that’s just right now! — should be a message to film/TV folks to set their sights on the bevy of excellent horror novels out there. I say this selfishly as a writer, sure, but also as a reader of them!

There is a practical effect in Backrooms that I won't even begin to describe but you see it in various stages in various details and it's fucking horrific in every single one of them. If you thought the monster movie genre is tapped out in the slightest this movie should rid you of the notion.

The more I sit with it the more I think Backrooms is really, really good, actually. Go see it on a big screen. You will walk out feeling differently than how you walked in. I make no other promises, because I think a lot of people will NOT like this, but I loved it.

I am beyond fascinated at how younger audiences see Backrooms (they think of YouTube, synthwave, an idea of places they've never been) vs. older audiences (we worked in those office buildings and malls, and know how deeply the smell of smoke infested them). Two VASTLY different emotional reactions

Backrooms was very good. More visually interesting than I was expecting, so metaphorical it's a little too on the nose, but fascinating topics explored in a super fascinating timeframe. It's strange to see the first movie in a series already have to fight a visual convention it invented years ago
