Back from a wonderful @bordercrim.bsky.social annual workshop, feeling lucky to have such brilliant colleagues old and new. We always profile work of early career peeps and they are fab. So much creativity & passion. It’s hard to be uplifted at the moment. But this did the trick.

Everybody knows the Libyan Coast Guard is involved in the mass abuse/torture/murder of people in Libya. Over the years this hasn't been enough for the EU to break off its partnership. The LCG is now targeting NGOs - apparently that used to be a Commission red line, but we'll see if it still is.

‘This is not about deporting people,’ he concluded. ‘This is about controlling a narrative and getting hold of the money.’

‘It’s just about making the European Court step in and say, “You can’t do that,” so they can splash it all over the papers: “How dare someone in Europe tell us what we should do… “We don’t need our human rights any more, because how dare someone out there be telling our government what to do?”’

While we should not get trapped in discussions about feasibility, the impossibility of Farage’s plans is important, since its inevitable failure plays another role that this man also recognised:

‘It’s just utterly unfeasible, let alone illegal at the moment […]. And yet, there’s millions of pounds being thrown at it, and my shares [as a senior member of staff] have tripled in value, the dividends are coming out.’

‘We’d need, what? - 6 planes constantly flying backwards and forwards, 3 in the air at all times. We’d need, I don’t know, pick a number -3000 staff, when we’ve only got 200.’

‘We can’t deport 3000 people a month. It’s impossible, it just is physically impossible, and no one’s done the maths. It’s not feasible.’
