On February 26, 2023, at least 94 people, including 35 minors, died in a shipwreck off the coast of the Steccato di #Cutro, in Calabria. An unknown number of people are missing and presumed dead.
 They could have been saved by the Italian authorities.

According to IOM just two months into 2026, at least 606 persons have been reported dead or missing along the #Mediterranean route.

With #Sudan’s ongoing conflict and continued instability in parts of Syria, Egypt has become a primary host country for those fleeing violence.

The African Centre for Justice and Peace Studies has now released a collaborative report analyzing legal and institutional gaps and the impact of international obligations on national politics in #Sudan regarding the fight against #humantrafficking and migrant smuggling.

The day before yesterday the EU Parliament adopted a new list and rules for safe third countries.

The European Parliament expanded the EU list of so-called “safe countries of origin”. The new list also includes #Egypt, a country where numerous human rights violations are documented.

Just now the EU decided that Tunisia is a "Safe country of origin". Tunisia is not safe for its citizens or for people who are intercepted or rescued at sea.

Investigations by nd and Sea-Watch show that #Frontex forwards information about people in distress at sea only to the so-called Libyan coast guard, enabling interceptions and returns to #Libya.

#Germany and the #EU are massively tightening asylum policies: new „safe countries“, return centres outside Europe, and easier deportations are being implemented.

Between November 3th and 30th alone, 554 have been deported by the Italian Government. Those numbers a part of a troubling development: In the first half of 2025, deportations of „irregular migrants“ have surged across the EU—up 12.7%, with Germany increasing deportations by 25% and Italy by 12%.

#Frontex is expanding its aerial surveillance to Cape Verde – the first deployment of its kind in #Africa.

On 13 November, Italy and Albania signed 16 new agreements and reaffirmed their migration deal.
