Many people were forced to undergo severe trauma by being detained at Campsfield IRC. Now, the government has reopened it. This is horrifying. Immigration detention destroys lives. The government needs to end its use, not expand it.

Asylum is about protecting people. But the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Act, which received royal assent this week, treats asylum as a border security issue. It continues the trend of criminalising people seeking sanctuary. It builds walls against refugees. We need something different.

Successive governments' performative focus on tough immigration control is putting people at risk of modern slavery and trafficking. Enough is enough. We need laws and policies that protect victims, survivors, and people at risk of trafficking.

Against the backdrop of a cost of living crisis and vaunting inequality, both in the UK and globally, we must create deep systemic change to eradicate poverty. At JRS, we work alongside people seeking asylum who are forced to live in absolute poverty.

Our hearts are broken to hear of the lethal attack on the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Manchester. Our thoughts and prayers are especially with the victims whose lives were cut brutally short, with those who are injured, and with those who mourn their lost loved ones.

We are heartbroken by reports that three people - including two children - have drowned in the Channel. As more details emerge, we must remember that each of them had hopes and dreams that will never be realised, and loved ones who now grieve an unimaginable loss.

All of this. And also, military barracks are more expensive than asylum hotels. Which is why the Home Office moved on from using them. Back to performative and money-wasting policy making.

Women, men & children seeking sanctuary should not be left in overcrowded hotels for months on end. The answer is not more political theatre or warehousing people on disused military bases.

At JRS UK, we regularly work with refugees forced to leave their homes and separated from family members. Of course they desperately want to reunite with them, as any of us would. Allowing them to do so is a basic recognition of humanity.

Once a month, refugee friends join the WaSh Wombles – Wapping’s local litter-picking group – for their community clean-up. This month, 33 volunteers, including 9 refugee friends, collected 42 bags of litter. Real community is people coming together, building connections & creating a cleaner Wapping💙
