Rosoman was a fireman in the Blitz. The men in the painting died. It haunted him. He painted the scene many times. He was later an important teacher; David Hockney was one of his students. He died aged 98 in 2012.

Meeting ancient trees is always amazing, this yew though in Llangernyw in North Wales is thought to be 4,000, perhaps 5,000 yrs old! It is older than Christianity and Stonehenge. 0ne of the oldest living beings on the planet.

Well, what a strange and wonderful survival this is…a turf maze dating from 1660! 🤩 It sits in the middle of the very lovely village of Hilton, Cambridgeshire, and was made by William Sparrow, a royalist, to commemorate the restoration of Charles II.

It might interest some to know that firefighters were (maybe still are!) supplied with an ACME Thunderer Whistle, which always delighted us whenever it was mentioned.

Not long after I left school, in the late 70s I worked in the admin (personnel) dept for Merseyside Fire Brigade, and the Firefighters still took courses to earn the title "Merryweather Turntable Ladder Operator", so this photo and story fascinated me as I had no idea of the history of Merryweather!

A hammered bronze lion’s head, made in the 8th century BCE, and spotted last week in the museum at Olympia, Greece. The eyes would have been inlaid and it was possibly attached to a votive shield or used as a building decoration.
