The story of Eric Walrond is featured in today's Guardian - including his time at Roundway Hospital in Devizes. Walrond was an award-winning author at the heart of the Harlem Renaissance of 1920's New York before moving to Wiltshire at the outbreak of WW2. www.theguardian.com/books/2026/m...

This #findsfriday we have a bronze knife dagger with four rivets, 3 grooves and a central area decorated with dots (part of its wooden handle also remains attached) found with primary cremation in Bowl Barrow Wimborne St Giles G20, excavated by William Cunnington.

Should perhaps have added that we were behind the fundraising campaign led by Lt Col Heward Bell of Seend Cleeve to buy the first fields in the 1920's. He was our President. The land was then donated to the National Trust. The gift is commemorated on a granite boulder close to the Stonehenge Avenue.

The National Trust owns and cares for 840 hectares of the Stonehenge World Heritage Site, which includes hundreds Neolithic and Bronze Age sites and monuments including the Avenue, the Cursus and a host of barrow cemeteries. 🧵

Today is International Sculpture Day! Here in our collection we have a number of sculptures created by Peter Hicks from Seend. This cold cast metal sculpture of a Dairman from Circa 1900 and carrying a milk can ,was commissioned by Unigate Dairies Ltd.

Saw this Isaac Witkin #sculpture at the Michener Museum in Doylestown Pennsylvania, just by accident and had to look it up. Sure enough Witkin was assistant to British sculptor Henry Moore during the early 1960s, and we know Moore produced a number of works that reference #Stonehenge.

This #findsfriday we have 10 amber beads (oval) from a primary cremation in the bronze age bowl barrow, Amesbury G48, excavated by William Cunnington. These were found with a primary cremation in Bowl Barrow Amesbury G48 and are part of a small group which probably make up a necklace.

Illustrator, antiquarian & writer Margaret Stokes did these watercolours of the front/back of the Shrine of St Patrick's Bell around the 1870s. The bell is said to have belonged to St Patrick, is datable to between 1091 & 1105, & is one of the principal relics of Ireland. #stpaddysday #stpatricksday

In France, a Prize is named after her contemporary, Joseph Déchelette. In Britain, Cunnington is instead written out of our disciplinary history. These two were equally important in the development of Iron Age studies. I’d offer that Cunnington, who was moving against invasionist theory, was moreso.
