Commemorating VJ Day Salisbury’s Jim Smith joined the RAF in 1941, was captured in 1942, and spent 3½ years as a Japanese POW in brutal conditions. His son, Ken, volunteers at The Salisbury Museum, where Jim’s artefacts are displayed. We honour all who sacrificed for our tomorrow.

We recently welcomed to the museum Nick Abbott, descendent of Salisbury photographer Henry Brooks. Nick lives in New Zealand and came to see Henry’s microscope for the first time in 60 years. Whilst here, he also saw the painting ‘Mrs Ridout and the Coombe Express’ by Frank Brooks, son of Henry.

Despite the louring skies on Saturday, The Salisbury Museum's Members' Garden Party was a huge success at the stunning Walton Canonry, former home of Rex Whistler. Guests enjoyed prosecco, afternoon tea, traditional games and punting overlooking the water meadows.

Today we were proud to welcome a rather soggy Richard Burt with Dilly the guide dog to Salisbury Museum. Richard is visually impaired and has walked all the way from Brighton to Salisbury with Dilly to raise funds for Wiltshire Sight. #WiltshireSight

Tying in with Creativity and Wellbeing Week, yesterday our Well-City Salisbury free 10-week creative course was held at the museum – supporting people with mental health needs. Participants explore ancient pot making techniques including coil pots, pinch pots and slab pots.

The bottle, symbolising the witch’s bladder, was thought to cause a urine infection when filled with nails and pins. To cure this painful affliction, the witch would need to lift the curse they had placed. It's currently displayed in the new galleries at @salisburymuseum.bsky.social.

Last weekend we welcomed Dan Snow & family to see our Lantern clock, made in Salisbury by Dan’s ancestor, Nicholas Snowe, ‘a watchmaker, dyall maker and clockmaker,’ in 1636. Lantern clocks were introduced from continental Europe and were the first private clocks for the home.

Celebrating World Earth Day 2025. In 2024 Salisbury Museum opened its Natural History Gallery. Mammoths roamed Wiltshire until 10,000 years ago when climate change and hunting probably caused their extinction. Mammoth teeth similar to this one on display, have been found in Fisherton, Salisbury.
